Annotation:  The article analyzes the British newspaper «The Times» evaluation of the political activity of Hungarian Prime Minister Kalman Tisza (1875–1890). Using the method of content analysis of the publications of this newspaper, the author comes to the conclusion that Britain perceived the Austro-Hungarian Empire as its successor, which successfully implemented the transition from an absolute monarchy to a parliamentary system of government. In this regard, the British society was interested in the work of the Hungarian Parliament and, in particular, its liberal reforms. Britain also closely kept an eye on Hungary’s financial system and its ability to participate in hostilities, as these factors are evidence of the country’s strength and make it possible to consider it either as an ally or as an opponent. Therefore, in general, the activity of the Cabinet of Kalman Tisza in the newspaper «The Times» is considered very positive, because during his reign the financial system of Hungary stabilized, the military power of the country increased and some liberal reforms were adopted. However, according to «The Times», Britain paid little attention to such interstate problems as social unrest, oppression and infringement of the rights of non-Hungarian nationalities in the process of magyarization policy, trying to perceive them as private manifestations of the internal policy of Hungary. In this regard, the author comes to the conclusion that the assessment of the political situation in Hungary in 1875–1890, presented in the newspaper «The Times», is one-sided and does not cover the full range of problems that existed in Hungary during this period of time.
