Annotation:  The article deals with the historical periods of the formation of the educational law as an independent branch, the totality of the norms fixed in laws that differ in their legal force, the regulatory framework for the regulation of educational relations at various stages of the functioning of the home state is analyzed. An attempt is made to periodize the formation and development of educational law, taking into account various classification criteria, such as the historical stage of the existence of state-legal reality, the source of fixing the norms regulating educational relations and others. The study of the historical path of the legal regulation of educational relations makes it possible to identify the tendency of the development of this state-legal institution, to timely eliminate the negative factors that accompany this process, and to ensure effective regulatory and legal regulation of educational relations in Russia.
