Annotation:  In the article on the basis of data the «Theodosian Code» and other sources are considered the powers and status of the prefect of the City in the Late Roman Empire. In addition to managing one of the capitals, prefects performed a number of functions in the system of national governance. Being the head of the City the prefect had administrative authority, provide fiscal discipline, responsible for the food supply, and public order. In the system of national governance, the prefect advocated as an intermediary between the provincial administration and the emperor.
