Annotation:  Scientific research on canon law in Russia was developed in the 19th century, almost simultaneously with its study in educational institutions. Scientific papers and textbooks were written. The article is devoted to the publication of «The Apostolic Canons, the Rules of the Ecumenical and Local Councils and Holy Fathers with interpretations», carried out with the efforts of members of Society of Spiritual Enlightenment. The idea of publication was closely connected with the project development of a reform of the church court and the incipient dialogue of the Russian Orthodox Church with non-Orthodox Christians. In subsequent years, the relevance of publication of the «Rules» increased due to the establishment of the Pre-Conciliar Presence in 1905–1906. The selection and translations, publication of texts, clarification of terminology brought together many specialists and took over forty years to complete. An important and essential scientific, practical and academic activity was carried out. The article draws attention to the moral and material assistance of Moscow Metropolitans, and also reflects the financial and organizational difficulties of the publication.
