Annotation: The article discusses the main approaches to the study of the phenomenon of "risk" in science. Considered risk classifications proposed by domestic scientists. It was concluded that for risks arising in the process of administrative management of institutions of higher education, classifications require adjustment. Based on the results of the author's sociological research “Social risks of managing a regional higher education institution” conducted in Belgorod universities, it has been proposed to supplement classifications by highlighting risks for three reasons: the characteristics of the actors in the educational process; disposition of risk in the structure of activity (risk-process and risk-result); consequences of risk (positive and negative). The obtained empirical data provide a basis for clarifying the risk classifications use in the scientific literature. These clarifications will allow to adjust the practice of risk management, primarily in universities and organizations operating in other areas.
