The current state of the Volgograd region’s tourism: trends and growth points

Annotation:  Based on the analysis of primary statistical data and strategic program documents, the current state of the tourism industry in the Volgograd region was studied. The analysis revealed a steady trend to increase the quantitative indicators of the enterprise structures development in the sphere of tourism, as well as the number of tourists visiting the Volgograd region. Minor tourism place in the structure of the GRP (less than 1%) proves the lack of demand from the part of regional and municipal management of this sector as a promising area of business development, of increasing of the quality of life of the local population and of increasing of the region's competitiveness. Problems of tourism development in the region were identified and promising directions for development were proposed. Event, scientific, educational and medical types of tourism were chosen and justified as growth points. The study fi ndings and recommendations may be useful in the practice of public authorities for the development of administrative decisions in the sphere of tourism and hospitality industry in Russia, for the effi cient use of the tourist potential of an individual region and of the country as a whole.
