Annotation:  The paper deals with the discussion of improving the life of the Orthodox clergy, which were published in the journal «Duhovny vestnik» from 1862 to 1867. The opinions and suggestions of the clergy on this issue. Improving the life of the Orthodox clergy was one of the main directions of reforms in the Russian Orthodox Church of the 1860s. Periodicals published on the initiative of the white clergy were distinguished by relative freedom in choosing topics and expressing opinions of the clergy. Improving the life of the Orthodox clergy is considered in the context of the place of the Orthodox clergy in the estate structure of the Russian Empire of the second half of the XIX century. The authors of the papers in «Duhovny vestnik» noted main problems of the clergy: difficult financial situation, relations with other estates, clergy’s rights. There were a few projects which could solve some problems of the Russian orthodox clergy. The main ideas of this projects was to pay a money to the priests for their service and give them more social rights.
