Annotation:  In a journalistic heritage of the early twentieth century a special place belongs to the memoirs – the living testimony of the difficult era of social upheavals, wars and, oddly enough, the flourishing of culture. The memoir literature of the Silver age is still evokes constant interest among specialists and a wide range of readers. Since the end of the last century, numerous memoirs of writers, public and political figures, revolutionaries, caught in the whirlpool of history have been published. Unfortunately, some of the memoirists today have been forgotten. One of them – Sergey Rudolfovich Mintslov (1870–1933), bibliographer, journalist, writer. About his library there were legends, and his adventure novels were read by young people. The article gives an analysis of the memoir book of S.R. Mintslov "Petersburg in 1903– 1909 years". The author of the memoirs collaborated in many St. Petersburg publications of that time. In his book, he not only describes the events, but also talks about how they were reflected in press publications. The Russian-Japanese war of 1904 and the first Russian revolution of 1905 and their interpretation in the press are the basis of memoirs. The author testifies that the enlightened public treated the newspapers with mistrust and disdain, and at the same time appealed to them as a source of information. The attitude of the public to the press, the role of publications in the formation of public opinion, the policy of the state in relation to the printed word – these and other moments are of interest to today's reader. They became the subject of study in this article.
