Annotation:  The article is devoted to the study of primary historical-geographical images of the West in ancient Russian intellectual tradition by the example of the "Tale of bygone years", the most famous monument of the historiographical traditions of Kievan Rus. There were used such sources as "The Chronicle" by Georgios Amartolos which was the main source of knowledge on world history and geography for the Russian Medieval intellectuals and the "Tale of bygone years" in the edition of the Laurentian chronicle. Historiography on the subject is presented by many authors such as A.A. Shahmatov, V.M. Istrin. For example, A.V. Nazarenko, paid great attention to the development of trade relations between Russia and other regions of the world and the impact of these relationships on mutual cultural perception. D.V.
