Annotation:  The article substantiates the General philosophical and cultural approach to understanding the phenomenon of the book in the form of synthesis of existential and semiotic methods, based on the concept of "the world as a book" by H.-L. Borges and the concept of polymorphism of the semiosphere by Y. M. Lotman. It is shown that going beyond the trivial ideas about the "ontology" of the book and its cultural function is possible within the framework of understanding the book as a "model of the world" and as a dynamic subject of culture, which has a dialogical status. The book developed simultaneously with the development of society, embodying its main achievements and meeting the requirements of a particular historical era. The book as a product created in the field of material production, has a real form, different personality elements characteristic of each historical period of time. At the same time, it affects the most delicate sphere of the human person – his spiritual world. Under the influence of the book, each individual has different ideas, images, thoughts, which in the process of existence form a cumulative knowledge, giving impetus to a new round in the development of social consciousness
