Annotation: This article reveals the peculiarities of functioning and results of state banks in Russia, substantiates the positive and negative aspects of the state influence on banks, identifies the factors that affect their com-petitiveness. Particular attention is paid to assessing the reliability of banks with state participation, taking into account such indicators as capital adequacy, instant liquidity ratio, profitability combined with capital adequacy against the background of the share of deposits of the population. As a result of the conducted research the actual directions of increasing the competitiveness of domestic state-owned banks in order to strengthen their positions in the international financial markets are proposed.
