Annotation: The article deals with the specifics of the activities of the Leningrad City Executive Committee on the development of the school education system and the elimination of illiteracy in Leningrad in the 1950s-1960s. By the beginning of the 1950s, in Leningrad, basically, the tasks of restoring the municipal econ-omy and eliminating the damage caused by the war and the enemy blockade of the city were solved. The restoration and maintenance of the full-fledged functioning of the life support system for cities and re-gions by party leadership was entrusted to the local organs of the Soviet government-the city and district councils of deputies and their permanent executive committees. In this connection, the activity of the Len-ingrad City Council and its executive committee in the sphere of social policy and management of the life support of Leningrad is of interest. The mechanism of solving complex problems of restoration and build-ing of school buildings, providing teaching staff of the Leningrad school, improving the quality of their work is analyzed.
