Annotation: The liberation of Czechoslovakia during the Great Patriotic War was initiated by the Eastern Carpathian strategic offensive operation, an integral part of which became the Carpathian-Uzhgorod offensive opera-tion of the 4th Ukrainian Front (September-October 1944). During September, 9 – November, 6, 1944, the troops of the 4th Ukrainian Front, overcoming the fierce resistance of the enemy, approached the Main Carpathian Range, overcame it, descended the southern slopes of the Carpathians and reached the Hungarian Lowland, while liberating part of Czechoslovakia from the Nazi invaders. A significant role in the operation was played by tank and mechanized forces, which, in the difficult conditions of the moun-tainous wooded area, caused considerable damage to the enemy and seized the cities of Mukachevo and Uzhgorod. During the fighting was established that tanks and self-propelled artillery systems in mountain gorges should be used in small groups behind infantry combat orders, using infantry troops and escorting sappers; special attention in the mountain-wooded area requires the organization of interaction of all combat arms. The acquired tactical experience was of great importance for the subsequent fighting in the mountain regions of Slovakia.
