Annotation:  The article reveals the connection of Plato's substantiation of philosophy with the approaches he applied to define thinking. Plato sought to prove the social and ideological importance of philosophy and its epistemological status. This required a theoretical foundation of thinking as a cognitive faculty of the soul and as a source of knowledge of the higher principles of being. There are three approaches to the definition of thinking in Plato's dialogues: epistemological, logical and dialogical. Systematically defined thinking confirmed an ontological status of philosopher and his mind: the knowledge of pure being was accessible to a man who possessed a specific «philosophical nature»

Keywords:  Plato, philosophy, thinking, reason, mind.
