Annotation:  The article substantiates the introduction of environmental innovations in the implementation of large gas transportation projects and provides alternative options for the implementation of large gas transportation projects, where selection criteria are allowed taking into account possible options for environmental restrictions. It is shown that due to the redistribution of international financial markets, new problems arise related to the emergence of new financial instruments. which show higher environmental friendliness. Of particular importance are projects related to the development and implementation of large-scale gas transmission projects. The main attention in the article is paid to the analysis of an alternative and reasonable choice of the route of the Nord Stream – 2 gas pipeline through Russia. It is shown that the methodology that was used to evaluate alternative options provides for the need to deliver gas through the territory of Russia to the intersection of the coastline, as well as the need to build and operate a large compressor station. Research on the Nord Stream – 2 project was carried out in three stages from 2012 to 2017. The choice of route was made taking into account a comprehensive analysis of technical, economic, environmental and social factors. For comparative evaluations of the options, 390 criteria were established that sufficiently and comprehensively reflect the background state of the main components of the environment and their expected changes. Estimates of the expected impacts on individual components of the environment, to compare trace options, are also used with four different parameters of a multicriteria point-rating assessment of environmental safety. Of all the considered options for the route of the Nord Stream – 2 gas pipeline, the route through the Gulf of Narva was recognized.
