Annotation:  Based on the newly introduced into scientific circulation documents from the archive of the library of the Air force Academy named after Professor N.E. Zhukovsky and Gagarin (Voronezh), the article presents the history of the participation of the air force of the 40th army of the Limited contingent of Soviet troops in Afghanistan in operation «Wave». The methodological basis of the study was the system of general theoretical and general scientific methods, as well as problem-chronological, historical-descriptive and complex approaches, the principles of historicism and scientific objectivism. The purpose and concept of the operation are analyzed, the tasks faced by air forces of the 40th army are characterized, the main shortcomings identified in the course of combat use of Soviet aviation are examined, and the results of the fighting are summed up. Lastly, the conclusions about the effectiveness of Soviet aviation in operation «Wave» are drawn.
