Annotation:  The article examines the phenomenon of punishment in the Russian culture of the XVII - beginning of the XIX century. It is noted that one of the first mentions of the punishment we find in the literature of life, in which physical suffering is associated with the patience of the Christian. This understanding of punishment has played a huge role in the development of Russian ethical thought and the understanding of punishment in Russian culture. Russian writers of the XIX century more than once turned in their works to the topic of imprisonment, bondage, punishment. Freedom as an idea and value for European culture is one of the main ones. It is also comprehended by domestic thinkers, as the interpretation of the phenomenon of punishment in the works of M.Yu. Lermontov reveals two paradigmatic models: the socio-ethical (reconciliation and unity with people and the world) and the state-patriotic (punishment as a statement of legitimate power). The concept of shame and fear in the culture of Yu.M. Lotman allows the models outlined above to extend to the entire national culture of this period.
