IDEOLOGICAL MODALITY OF PRECEDENT PHENOMENA IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE POLITICAL DISCOURSE

Annotation:  The article is devoted to the problem of ideological modality of precedent phenomena in the English language political discourse. Politics is the struggle for power and influence in the society. The political life in the country depends on the way the events and participants are presented and estimated in mass media. Mass media try to reflect the reality (events, facts, participants) on one hand, and create their own reality on the other hand. The algorithm of identifying ideological modality of mediatexts is offered in the article. Ideological modality can be determined by means of the discourse analysis of the text taking into consideration extralinguistic, linguistic and cognitive factors. Extralinguistic factors comprise economic and political situation in the country, current and precedent events, ideology of the state and media outlet. Linguistic factors include the connotative aspect of the semantics of lexical units. Cognitive component of the political discourse is the pragmatics of mediatext and communicative strategy of the author (interpretation and evaluation of the events). The ideological modality of mediatexts indicates the ideology of the society, of the state and political views of the media outlet. The ideological modality is connected with axiological, emotive and deontic modality. The ideological modality of precedent phenomena conveys the author’s evaluation of an event, participants and it is aimed at shaping reader’s specific views
