Annotation:  The article discusses the evolution of relations between Germany and the US from 2009 to the spring of 2018. Before 2016, the German-American relations were on the rise. The positions of the parties connected with the problems of security and architecture of the world, the development of economic relations, environmental protection and climate change were similar. The situation began to shift after the change of presidential power in the United States. There was put into question all existing unions of the United States. This gives rise to the desire of the leaders of the European Union and Germany to intensify activities to strengthen defense within the EU, not NATO. There is a discrepancy between the positions of the German political elite and Washington regarding the new US sanctions against Russia. The Nord stream 2 project reinforces Germany's importance as the main recipient of Russian gas for Europe and will strengthen the already dominant German economy in the EU, and the EU itself can gain greater independence from the US.
