Annotation:  The article describes the problem of mapping the steppe vegetation in the field geobotanical descriptions and satellite imagery. The author describes methods for the creation of vegetation cover maps of steppe protected area on the example of the “Yamskaya steppe”. To create a final synthetic map was created 68 maps the occurrence of species and their abundance, maps of species richness in the groups: grasses and sedges, legumes and forbs, and total species richness, percent cover, digital elevation model and its derivatives (maps of the angles of inclination, exposition and steepness оf slopes). The developed procedure includes 7 stages, based on the cartographic method of research and expert assessment of authors. The article provides an analysis of the distribution of various groups of plants, as well as literature review of vegetation cover changes “Yamskaya steppe” over the last 80 years.
