Annotation:  This article investigates such acute and little-known topic as the origins of Ukrainian nationalism, as well as its historical, cultural and political aspects. The period under review covers the events of the middle of 19-th century to the early 1990s: from the genesis of the Ukrainian national movement till the collapse of the Soviet Union when Ukraine became the independent state. This approach allows to consider and compare the development of Ukrainian nationalism within the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. The goal of this article is to identify the historical background that shaped the specific features of Ukrainian nationalism. Particular attention is paid to the influence of external factors, the role of ideology and posi-tion of the Ukrainian diasporas, especially in Canada and the United States of America. The achieved re-sults allow to make a conclusion that Ukrainian nationalism has neither traditional features inherent in many national movements, nor specific, giving it a certain uniqueness.

Keywords:  Ukrainian national movement, Ukrainian nationalism, Organization of Ukrainian National-ists, integral nationalism, Ukrainian diaspora, Malorossy, Rusyns, indigenization, ukrainization, ukrain-ophilism.
