Annotation:  The article is devoted to the study of historiography of people's universities in imperial Russia in the late XIX-th – early XX-th centuries. Since the history of people's universities is an integral part of the history of cultural and educational activities, the article also considers the historiography of enlightenment. For modern science, the study of cultural and educational societies (including societies of people's universities) is not only a socio-cultural phenomenon, but also a phenomenon of social and political life, one of the manifestations of the formation of civil society in Russia at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Historiographic analysis of research in this area is presented in the article.
