Annotation:  The article is devoted to the problem of typology of fifth century embassies. The author has considered the number of typology which existed in modern historiography. On the basis of sources and works of predecessors he offers a new typology, which main criteria is the purposes of embassies. After that the author suggested own typology of embassies of fifth century, clear some limitations of previous classifications. In that new typology some shortcomings of the previous classifications are considered and corrected. The main classes of this typology are internal policy embassies, foreign policy embassies, legitimation embassies. Internal political embassies subdivision on requests for preferences and requests for protection against foederati. Foreign policy embassies subdivision on peace negotiations and the current international political communication. Legitimation embassies subdivided on the informing embassies and embassies from usurpers
